Time zone converter

Convert a time between cities and time zones on any date, with summer time, UTC offsets and the difference in hours.

The interactive form is ready when JavaScript is enabled.

How to use

Type the city or time zone you start from, the date and the time, and up to three places to convert to. City names work in several languages (Lisbon, Lisboa, New York, Tokyo), and so do the time zone names phones use, such as Europe/Lisbon or America/Sao_Paulo. Now fills in the current date and time.

The result shows the same moment in UTC and in each place: the local date and time, the offset from UTC, whether summer time applies, and the difference from where you started. When the date changes on the way, it says next day or previous day.

Summer time is applied for the date you choose, not for today, using the time zone rules built into your browser. A time the clocks skip when summer time starts is moved forward by the jump, and a time that happens twice when it ends is taken the first time; both cases are pointed out.

Example

The example: 15:00 in Lisbon on 20 March 2027 is 11:00 in New York, which is already on summer time while Lisbon is not yet, so the two are 4 hours apart instead of 5. It is 12:00 in São Paulo and 00:00 the next day in Tokyo.

  • 15:00 in Lisbon on 15 January 202710:00 in New York, 12:00 in São Paulo, 20:30 in India (UTC+5:30) and 00:00 the next day in Tokyo.
  • 15:00 in Lisbon on 15 July 202710:00 in New York, 11:00 in São Paulo and 23:00 in Tokyo: Lisbon is on summer time, Brazil and Japan are not.
  • 10:00 in New York on 20 March 202714:00 in London and Lisbon, 4 hours apart instead of 5: the United States moves its clocks on 14 March, Europe on 28 March.
  • 01:30 in Lisbon on 28 March 2027That time does not exist: at 01:00 the clocks jump to 02:00, so it is shown as 02:30.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the difference between two cities change during the year?

Because countries change their clocks on different dates, and many do not change them at all. The European Union moves them on the last Sunday of March and of October, at 01:00 UTC everywhere at once; the United States on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, at 2:00 local time. In between, Europe and the United States are an hour closer than usual.

What happens to a time that does not exist or happens twice?

When summer time starts, the clocks skip an hour: in Lisbon, 01:30 on 28 March 2027 never happens, and the tool shows 02:30. When it ends, an hour repeats: 01:30 on 31 October 2027 happens twice in Lisbon, and the tool takes the first and gives the second in a note.

Which names can I type?

A city in English or in your language, such as Lisbon, Munich or São Paulo, or a time zone name from the IANA database, such as Europe/Lisbon. UTC and GMT also work. Abbreviations such as IST or CST are not accepted, because they mean different zones in different countries.

Does Brazil still have summer time?

No. It was abolished in 2019, and Brazil’s time zones keep the same offset all year: São Paulo and Brasília are on UTC−3. That is why the difference with Europe is three hours in the European winter and four in the summer.

Is UTC the same as GMT?

For converting clock times, yes: both are the zero offset. London uses GMT in winter and British Summer Time, UTC+1, from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October.
