WHOIS / RDAP lookup

Look up public registration data for a domain, IPv4 or IPv6 address.

The interactive form is ready when JavaScript is enabled.

How to use

Enter a domain name or an IP address, without https:// or a path, to see its public registration record. For a domain that means the registrar, the status codes, the name servers, whether DNSSEC is signed, the registration, update and expiry dates and an abuse contact; for an address, the network name, the country, the address range and CIDR blocks, the parent network and the organisation’s abuse contact.

The answer comes from RDAP, the structured protocol that replaced WHOIS. Where WHOIS returned free text that every registry formatted differently, RDAP returns JSON with defined fields, which is why the same query now reads the same everywhere. Since January 2025 RDAP is the authoritative source for generic top-level domains such as .com; many country-code domains offer it too, but not all, so some, such as .pt and .de, currently return no result.

Unlike most nTools, this one has to look the record up online: your query goes to the nTools server, which asks the public rdap.org service to find the registry responsible and returns its answer. Only the domain or address you typed is sent. The page links to the authoritative source and can show the full technical response. Answers can be cached for up to an hour, so a very recent change may not show yet.

Status codes describe locks and states. client transfer prohibited stops the domain being moved to another registrar without being unlocked first, and is set by default on many registrations; server hold means the registry has removed the domain from the DNS, so it does not resolve; pending delete means it is about to be released.

Example

Queries public registration information for example.com. Some fields may be redacted or unavailable; the data is a live lookup.

  • example.comRegistrar, status codes, name servers and key dates.
  • 1.1.1.1The network APNIC-LABS in Australia, with its address range, CIDR block and abuse contact.
  • nic.ptNo result: some country-code domains, such as .pt and .de, are not currently reachable through RDAP.
  • https://example.com/pageRejected: enter only the domain, example.com.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the registrant’s name not shown?

Personal contact details have been redacted from public records since the GDPR took effect in May 2018. Registries publish the registrar, the status and the dates; the person behind a domain is reachable only through the registrar’s own channel.

What do status codes like client transfer prohibited mean?

They are locks. That one stops the domain being transferred to another registrar without being unlocked first, and is set by default on many registrations: it is a protection, not a problem.

Why does my domain return no result?

Either its registry does not offer RDAP yet, which is the case for some country-code domains, or the name is not registered. The registry’s own website usually has a lookup.

Can I find out when a domain will become free?

The expiry date shows when the current registration ends, but most domains are renewed, and an expired one passes through grace and redemption periods before it is released.
